Most guides to things to do in LA hand you a numbered list and wish you luck. That list will send you from Santa Monica to Hollywood to downtown and back in a single afternoon, which is how visitors end up spending more of their trip on the 10 freeway than at the places they came to see.

This guide is built the other way around. The best things to do in LA are clustered, not scattered, so everything below is grouped by neighborhood with the admission price, the hours, and the nearest Metro stop attached. Use this Los Angeles travel guide the way residents plan a weekend: one zone at a time. Every price and opening time was checked against the attraction’s own website on August 31, 2026, and where a figure could not be confirmed from an official source, this guide says so rather than repeating a number from a reseller.

Los Angeles drew 49.5 million visitors in 2025, including 43.1 million domestic and 6.4 million international travelers, according to figures the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board published on July 29, 2026, using methodology from Tourism Economics.

How we chose these 19 Travel Destinations

I have been to Kyoto, Rome, Marrakech, Bali, the Swiss Alps, and Paris. We gathered the remaining places by researching tourism websites and government publications, along with information from recent visitors.

We analyzed five criteria for each destination in terms of experiential value: culture, nature, history, beaches, gastronomy, and adventure. Destination diversity: whether it suits multiple types of travelers. Value: typical cost per day compared to what it offers. Practicalities: transport, ideal length of stay, and planning complexity. And 2026 relevance, meaning changes that will affect the destination this year. This list of 19 travel destinations isn’t ranked from best to worst; it uses a universal scale, since a honeymoon destination and a backpacking destination cannot be measured by the same standards.

Selection of the world’s best travel destinations involves not only choosing the best but also knowing what should be excluded from the list. A number of the world’s most popular postcards did not make their way into this guide for 2026. This doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful; it means getting there takes too much time or requires a different kind of itinerary. If you’ve wondered why some of the greatest travel destinations aren’t included in the list, here is why.

Destination

Why didn’t make the 19

who should go anyway

Petra, Jordan

A major multi-day archaeological park, but requires building a full Jordan itinerary to justify the long journey.

History lovers combining it with a wider Jordan or Middle East trip

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Best paired with a longer Southeast Asia itinerary rather than standing alone

Ancient history enthusiasts are already routing through Vietnam or Thailand.

The Great Wall of China

China’s visa and logistics complexity keeps it out of a quick-hit list

History travelers planning a dedicated China trip

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Remote and expensive to reach for most travelers on this list

Divers and snorkelers for whom the reef is the whole trip

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Works better as an add-on to a Vietnam itinerary than a flagship destination

budget travelers already in Southeast Asia

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

remote, high-altitude, and light on infrastructure

adventurous photographers chasing the mirror-effect salt flats

Grand Canyon, USA

a natural wonder rather than a full cultural or beach destination

road trippers already touring the American Southwest

Meteora, Greece

small enough to see in a day, easily folded into a Greece trip rather than standalone

monastery and hiking fans extending a Santorini or Athens trip

Pamukkale, Turkey

a single striking site rather than a multi-day base

travelers already doing Istanbul and Cappadocia who have an extra day

Vietnam (budget pick)

broader country coverage didn’t fit the single-destination format

budget travelers wanting Southeast Asia on $20 to $40 a day

Nepal (budget pick)

serious trekking commitment sets it apart from the rest of this list

hikers who want the Himalayas rather than the Andes or Alps

Georgia (budget pick)

still under most travelers’ radar despite genuine value

wine and mountain travelers looking for something less crowded

Bulgaria (budget pick)

affordable but lighter on bucket-list name recognition

budget-conscious Europe travelers who’ve already done the big cities

Budget note. Daily budgets are calculated per person and include accommodation, food, local transport, and sightseeing. Daily budgets don’t include airfare, insurance, purchases, or other major splurge expenses. Daily expenses depend on the season, destination, and travel style.

1. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan
  • Best for: First-time visitors to Japan, culture and history lovers, food travelers, and anyone looking for the top vacation spots for solo travelers.
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days
  • Budget: $85 to $160 a day outside luxury hotels
  • Getting there: Fly into Osaka or Tokyo, then take the train to Kyoto. A car isn’t necessary and mostly gets in the way.

I arrived at Fushimi Inari by 6:45 a.m., the air still cold from the night before. I wandered down through a forest of red torii gates practically alone. By 10 a.m., there was no room to move. This is the case in Kyoto. Timing is as important as where you go.

Kyoto isn’t just “temples.” Kyoto is home to more than 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, according to the Kyoto City Tourism Association, making it one of Japan’s densest concentrations of religious sites. Rather than visiting all these places at once, the trick is to choose a few key ones. Start your day at Fushimi Inari, then visit the well-known Kinkaku-ji, more commonly known as the “Golden Pavilion.” Spend a whole afternoon walking in the bamboo grove of Arashiyama before crowds of tourists descend on the place. The area of Gion where the geishas live should be seen at dusk when you walk around the area rather than taking pictures of the geiko and maiko running around to their next destination. The chasing has become so serious that there are some parts of Gion’s private paths where tourists are not allowed anymore.

As far as dining is concerned, steer clear of the tourist traps near the train station and head toward Nishiki Market for a traditional Japanese kaiseki dinner afterward, if your budget allows for one good dinner. For a luxurious stay, visit the Park Hyatt Kyoto in Higashiyama. On the question of doing something other than temple visits, if you have to choose only one, then it would have to be either the Kyoto International Manga Museum visit or a walk on the Philosopher’s Path during cherry blossoms.

What's new in 2026

Kyoto has set the highest accommodation tax rate in Japan since March 1, 2026. The tax scales dynamically across five tiers, from 200 yen a night for stays under 6,000 yen to 10,000 yen a night for stays of 100,000 yen or more. Kyoto has also introduced a special express bus to Higashiyama so tourists will not burden local commuter buses, as residents have complained for many years.

Nearby worth adding

Nara (45 minutes by train), for the deer park and the huge bronze Buddha at Todai-ji. Osaka (15 minutes by shinkansen/bullet train), for a completely contrasting and more vibrant, food-obsessed culture than Kyoto if Kyoto is too quiet for your taste.

Not ideal if: you want nightlife, beach time, or a fast, single-day itinerary; Kyoto rewards slowing down.

Arrive by 7 a.m., walk the upper trail almost alone

Gion

Chase geiko and maiko for photos in the alleys

Dinner

Nishiki Market first, then a side street kaiseki spot

2. Rome, Italy

Rome, Italy
  • Best for: History obsessives, food lovers, first-time Europe travelers
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 5 days
  • Budget: 80 to 150 dollars a day
  • Getting there: Fly into Rome-Fiumicino Airport, then take the train or metro into the city. A car in the center, which is an old city, would be more hassle than anything else.

Patience is highly rewarded in Rome. You can rush from the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon in a single day. Still, Rome truly came alive for me when I walked into Trastevere at eight o’clock at night, entered an Italian restaurant where there was no menu in English, and ate whatever the neighbors ordered.

The Colosseum has earned its reputation; however, make sure to get the Full Experience pass. While the regular ticket gives you access to the top tier and outside area, the Full Experience also lets you enter the underground rooms used by gladiators and animals before the games, plus the rebuilt arena floor. Combine it with the Roman Forum (which comes with your ticket) on the same trip, as seeing both the remains of the Senate and the Temple of Vesta straight after visiting the Colosseum gives you the full journey of Roman authority in one afternoon.

But in addition to these historical sites, set aside a half-day for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, and the Trevi Fountain is even more beautiful at 7 a.m. than at any other time. Toss a coin into it with your right hand behind your left shoulder if you want to observe the tradition, then grab some real coffee standing at a bar counter the local way, since it is often triple the cost seated at a table.

What's new in 2026

Colosseum tickets become available 30 days before your visit. Under the strict ticket regulations enforced for 2026, you may change the name on your booking only once, and you must complete the change by midnight on the seventh day before your scheduled visit. So you’ll need to purchase the ticket under the visitor’s name.

Nearby worth adding

You can visit Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast on a one-day excursion from Rome if you take an early-morning train; this is definitely possible.

Not ideal if: one would rather not walk for hours on cobblestone streets, does not enjoy visiting popular sites in large groups, or has fewer than three days.

3. Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece
  • Best for: Couples, honeymooners, sunset chasers
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days
  • Budget: 100 to 250 dollars a day depending on hotel tier
  • Getting there: Fly into Santorini’s small airport, or take a ferry from Athens or Crete. A rental car or ATV helps, since bus service between towns is limited.

What no one ever tells you about Santorini is that all those blue-domed churches seen in every single ad actually exist in just one town, Oia, and everybody shows up there for the same hour at sunset. I arrived at Oia at 6 p.m., expecting an idyllic experience, but instead I was swamped with people shooting videos on their smartphones. Next time, I’ll try to get there earlier or watch from Fira or Imerovigli.

Santorini’s real character is hidden in the things people tend to overlook. One example is Akrotiri, an interesting archaeological site dating back to the Bronze Age and buried in volcanic ash in 1600 B.C.; however, most cruise visitors don’t even try to see it. Another attraction is the Caldera, a walking route that connects Fira and Oia, lasts three or four hours, provides wonderful views of the Santorini cliffs without the necessity to hire a guide, and so on.

What's new in 2026

According to the port authority of Santorini, only 8,000 cruise passengers are allowed to visit the island on any given day in 2026, based on ships’ full capacity rather than the 80 percent used in 2025. This is indeed a reduction in the number of cruise passengers, which were previously more than 17,000 on any given day before the regulation.

Nearby worth adding

You can also take a ferry or sailing excursion to Milos, an island world-famous for its unique, moon-like volcanic landscape at Sarakiniko Beach.

Not ideal if: you’re on a tight budget, want a lively nightlife scene, or get uneasy on narrow cliffside roads.

4. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora, French Polynesia
  • Best for: Honeymooners, anniversary trips, anyone planning one big splurge
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days (it’s a long, expensive flight, so make it count)
  • Budget: 164 dollars a day if you skip the overwater bungalow, 600 dollars and up if you don’t
  • Getting there: fly into Tahiti’s Faa’a airport, then a short domestic flight or ferry to Bora Bora. No car needed; most resorts run their own boat shuttles.

An overwater bungalow is expensive, but it is the signature Bora Bora experience for travelers planning a luxury honeymoon, even if that means surviving on instant noodles for a month or two after the vacation. There’s just something unique about waking up to lift a glass panel on the floor and then seeing stingrays swimming under your bed.

But here’s the part travel blogs gloss over: The island of Bora Bora itself is small, and much of what you will end up doing is going to be resort-related. Matira Beach is the best public beach option if you want sand between your toes outside the resort. Snorkeling at the Coral Gardens among sea turtles and black-tip reef sharks is an absolute must-do highlight of any trip to the lagoon. Another activity to consider is shark and ray feeding during a half-day tour.

The extinct volcano in the island’s center is Otemanu, which stands 727 meters high and forms an impressive backdrop for resort photos. You cannot climb the summit of this volcano, but you can go for a boat tour in half a day around it.

What's new in 2026

Tahiti round-trip tickets have dropped below $600 for some flights, the lowest they’ve been in years, making the ticket cheaper than the hotel.

Nearby worth adding

Moorea is only 30 minutes by plane or boat from Tahiti and tends to run cheaper than Bora Bora, with scenery many travelers rate just as beautiful.

Not ideal if you are looking for nightlife, a shoestring budget, or sightseeing tours instead of resort holidaying.

5. Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, Peru

Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, Peru
  • Best for: Hikers, history lovers, anyone who wants a genuine bucket list moment
  • Ideal duration: 5 to 7 days including Cusco and the Sacred Valley
  • Budget: 50 to 90 dollars a day outside the Inca Trail
  • Getting there: fly into Cusco, then take the train or hike to Aguas Calientes, followed by a shuttle bus up to the site. A car is useless here; everything runs by rail or foot.

Many tourists treat Machu Picchu as the entire tour; however, that is not the right way to approach it. I stayed in Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and Moray in the Sacred Valley for two days before my Machu Picchu experience, which is very important since you get accustomed to the high elevation (3,400 meters), which does not permit hiking on your first day there, and this is where one can easily see Inca engineering without people around.

If you can, try the four-day Inca Trail trek rather than the train. A four-day hike through the Andes is an entirely different experience than simply getting off the bus and visiting for a day with a permit. It takes fitness and foresight, six months ahead of time sometimes, but it is the true Machu Picchu experience. If four days of camping isn’t possible, the single-day trek to the Sun Gate is a good compromise.

Inside the citadel, Circuit 2 offers the best coverage of the main buildings, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana rock, and the postcard viewpoint. Those who are physically fit and book in advance should not miss the Huayna Picchu hike (the mountain behind in each picture), which offers a panoramic view few people have ever seen, as access to these peak routes remains highly restricted under the Ministry’s strict preservation rules.

What's new in 2026

Peru’s Ministry of Culture set a daily quota of 5,600 visitors on peak dates in 2026 (January 1, April 2 to 5, June 19 to November 2, and December 30 to 31), and 4,500 on other days.

Nearby worth adding

The Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) excursion from Cusco is arduous but very rewarding if you have an extra day and can wake up at 4 a.m.

Not ideal if: you have mobility limitations that rule out altitude and extended walking, or you want a trip under five days.

6. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech, Morocco
  • Best for: Budget travelers, first-time Africa visitors, anyone who wants sensory overload in the best way
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days in the city, plus 2 to 3 more for a desert extension
  • Budget: 40 to 70 dollars a day
  • Getting there: fly into Marrakech Menara Airport, a short taxi ride from the medina. Skip the car entirely; the old city is walk-only and largely car-free by design.

Marrakech was completely overwhelming the first day I arrived there, but that’s what makes it such a great place. The medina is an actual maze, no grid system here, just small, winding roads filled with shops selling leather goods and spices, and lots of motorcycles dodging pedestrians. The big square, Jemaa el Fna, goes from being an average marketplace during the day to something wild and lively in the evening, with snake charmers, performers, and food vendors.

For a change of pace, visit the Majorelle Garden, which used to belong to Yves Saint Laurent; the garden is cool, shady, and totally worth the money. Another place where you can experience the architecture of the city but without the hassle of bargaining is Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs. However, if you do decide to try your bargaining skills, expect to pay around 30 to 40 percent less than what you were told at the souks.

The more important decision few people appreciate is whether to add the Sahara Desert extension. Spending two or three days in Merzouga on a camel ride through the dunes and camping in a desert tent beneath star-studded skies is one of the more distinctive things to do in North Africa.

Entry requirements

Passport holders from the USA, UK, Canada, and most European nations may visit without a visa for 90 days.

Nearby worth adding

A visit to Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains within an hour or two outside of the city helps clear your head if the excitement of the medina gets to you.

Not ideal if: you dislike haggling, get overwhelmed by crowded maze-like streets, or want a relaxed beach-first trip.

7. Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia
  • Best for: Budget backpackers, yoga and wellness travelers, digital nomads, surfers
  • Ideal duration: 7 to 10 days minimum, since the island’s regions feel genuinely different from each other
  • Budget: 30 to 50 dollars a day outside the tourist levy
  • Getting there: fly into Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai Airport, then arrange a car or driver for wherever you’re staying; the island is too spread out to walk between regions.

The biggest mistake new visitors make in Bali is staying at only one hotel and not moving around. Bali feels like several different destinations in one island. Ubud is calm and green, centered on rice paddies, yoga centers, and the Sacred Monkey Forest. Then there are Canggu and Seminyak, which are about surfing and beach clubs, social and crowded with digital nomads working from beachside cafes. Lastly, Uluwatu has the best surf spots and an amazing clifftop temple for watching Kecak fire dances.

Rice terraces at Tegalalang near Ubud have become the iconic shot, but they’re even more fun early in the morning, before the coaches arrive. There is only one thing I wouldn’t miss: climbing Mount Batur to see the sunrise from the top. It took me three hours and gave me the view of Mount Agung from the summit as well.

What's new in 2026

All international tourists will now be charged a fee of IDR 150,000 (about 10 US dollars) specifically when entering Bali; it has been in place since 2024 but will be enforced more rigorously in 2026, after authorities realized only 35 percent of eligible visitors have paid the levy since it began.

Nearby worth adding

Nusa Penida or Gili Islands, which can be accessed by fast boat, if you’re interested in the beach and snorkeling aspect of Indonesia minus Bali’s traffic.

Not ideal if: you want a short trip, anything under a week barely covers one region, or you’re not comfortable with scooter and moped traffic.

8. The Swiss Alps (Zermatt)

The Swiss Alps (Zermatt)
  • Best for: Hikers, skiers, anyone who wants mountain scenery without a technical climb
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days
  • Budget: 150 to 250 dollars a day; this is not a cheap destination
  • Getting there: fly into Zurich or Geneva, then take a train to Täsch and a shuttle into car-free Zermatt. Leave the car behind entirely; it can’t enter town.

What makes Zermatt special is that it is totally free of cars. I arrived there by train, and everything after that moved by electric taxi, horse-drawn sleigh in winter, or on foot. There was not even any traffic noise; just clean mountain air and the sound of cowbells during summer.

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car takes you to 3,883 meters, the highest cable car station in Europe. On a good weather day, you get to look down on Italy and view what is actually an absurd number of mountain peaks, 38 in total, along with 16 glaciers. For an alternative to altitude sickness, take the Gornergrat cog railway for an amazing photo opportunity of the Matterhorn.

If you are a hiker, your preferred route will be between Sunnegga and Riffelsee lake, where you can capture the Matterhorn reflected in the still waters on a tranquil morning. This trek takes about 3 to 4 hours and requires no special equipment. The winter skiing draws visitors from across Europe.

What's new in 2026

Full-fare return cable car tickets from Zermatt to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (via Klein Matterhorn, all the way through to Testa Grigia in Italy) cost CHF 143 in winter low season, CHF 183 in the May to June and September to October shoulder season, and CHF 207 in the July to August summer season, so visiting outside July and August can save you money.

Nearby worth adding

Interlaken, roughly two to three hours away, is a fantastic base for Jungfraujoch and Lake Brienz, making it an excellent dual-stop addition to your Swiss itinerary.

Not ideal if: you’re on a tight budget, get uneasy at altitude, or want a beach or city trip instead of mountains.

9. Patagonia, Chile (Torres del Paine)

Patagonia, Chile (Torres del Paine)
  • Best for: Serious hikers, wildlife watchers, anyone who wants genuine remoteness
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days minimum, more if you’re doing the full W Trek
  • Budget: 60 to 100 dollars a day for independent travel, more for guided multi-day treks
  • Getting there: fly into Punta Arenas or El Calafate, then a ground transfer to Puerto Natales. Unlike most of this list, a rental car or organized transport actually helps here; public transit in the region is sparse.

Torres del Paine isn’t a place you can visit in one day, although many cruise companies try to portray it that way. However, Torres del Paine has its true beauty in a five-day trek covering some 80 kilometers (50 miles), which involves passing by the three granite pillars for which it was named, through turquoise lakes, and at the foot of the glacier named Grey, where pieces of ice about the size of a building sometimes fall into the lake before you.

If it is unrealistic for you to trek for five days, the one-day trek to the Viewpoint Base de las Torres (approximate total distance of 18 to 20 kilometers round trip, 8 to 10 hours) will take you to the most popular vista of the park, namely the three granite towers jutting from a glacial lake.

The wildlife here is another definite attraction. You can see guanacos (wild cousins of the llama) throughout. With some good fortune and a guide, you can spot the Andean condor and, increasingly, the puma, since the park is now one of the more dependable sites in South America to do so.

What's new in 2026

The entrance fee for international visitors is 35 dollars during peak season (November to March), and 18 dollars during the low season. Chile’s park administrator, CONAF, is moving away from charging by days of stay and is now following a trail-based system, starting May 1, 2026.

Nearby worth adding

El Chaltén, on the other side of the border in Argentina, offers another world-class trekking base (Mount Fitz Roy) if you want to extend your Patagonian adventure.

Not ideal if you dislike multi-day hiking, have fewer than four days to spare, or need guaranteed clear weather.

10. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa
  • Best for: Travelers who want a city, a mountain, and a coastline in one trip
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days
  • Budget: 60 to 100 dollars a day
  • Getting there: Fly into Cape Town International, then take a straightforward taxi or rideshare into the city. A rental car helps for Cape Point and the Winelands, but isn’t required for the city center.

The magic of Cape Town is that you don’t need to choose between city life and the outdoors as you would elsewhere. By morning, you can eat breakfast in the V&A Waterfront; by early afternoon, you can ride the cable car to the top of Table Mountain; and by nightfall, you can be sipping sundowners at the beach bar in Camps Bay.

Table Mountain, one of the official New7Wonders of Nature, is best conquered early in the morning, before the ‘tablecloth,’ a cloud layer that moves over the flat mountaintop and shuts down the cable car completely. As the cable car floor rotates, everyone can enjoy the view without competing for a window seat, and the approximately $22 fare is worth it. Platteklip Gorge is the quickest path by foot to get up Table Mountain.

In addition to the mountain, a half-day trip to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, with a stop at Boulders Beach to see the African Penguin Colony, is one of the best-value tours in the city. The Cape Winelands and Stellenbosch & Franschhoek area can be reached in less than an hour and are worth a whole day’s tour, if one enjoys wine-tasting amid beautiful mountain vistas. Lastly, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison, is a tour not to be missed.

What's new in 2026

Table Mountain has introduced a digital queueing system this year to reduce wait times at the cableway base station, while the cableway usually shuts down for maintenance between late July and early August; avoid this period.

Nearby worth adding

If you have more days to spend and like beach life, forest walks, and charming little towns besides the main city itself, consider the Garden Route, a few days’ journey from Cape Town along the coast.

Not ideal if: you have limited mobility for Table Mountain’s trails, or you’re only stopping for a couple of days; the city rewards at least four.

11. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan
  • Best for: first-time Japan visitors who want modern energy over temple quiet, food travelers, shoppers.
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days.
  • Budget: 80 to 150 a day.
  • Getting there: fly into Narita or Haneda, then take the train straight into the city; both airports connect directly. A car is a genuine liability here; the train system covers everything better.

Tokyo pulls it off because it doesn’t make you choose which era you want to experience. In Asakusa, Senso-ji Temple offers early-morning old Japan. Shibuya Crossing and the Shinjuku skyline provide the image people tend to picture. Tsukiji Outer Market still offers a morning food tour, even though the wholesale auctions moved to Toyosu years ago.

In addition to Asakusa and Shibuya, Akihabara should not be missed by any electronic gadget lover, anime enthusiast, or arcade fan. The basement floors of department stores such as Isetan offer inexpensive yet good-quality meals; you just have to point to what appeals to your appetite. If you want a more tranquil area, Yanaka is worth a visit. It’s one of the few neighborhoods that survived both the 1923 earthquake and the wartime bombing.

Our advice: download a digital Suica or Pasmo card to your smartphone wallet before you arrive, or pick up a tourist-specific Welcome Suica pass at the airport.

What's new in 2026

With more than 10.6 million visitors in the first quarter of 2026, Japan welcomed its highest number of foreign visitors ever recorded, and the departure tax increased threefold from 1,000 to 3,000 yen starting July 1, 2026, according to Japan tourism reports quoting the JNTO. The current accommodation tax of 100 to 200 yen per head per night will change to a percentage-based model by April 2027.

12. Paris, France

Paris, France
  • Best for: art lovers, first-time Europe visitors, couples.
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days.
  • Budget: 90 to 160 a day, placing it firmly on the higher end when looking at European capitals ranked from cheapest to most expensive for travelers.
  • Getting there: fly into Charles de Gaulle or Orly, then take the RER or a taxi into the city. Skip the car; the metro covers the city better than driving ever could.

The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower might seem like the logical choices, but for me the real charm of Paris lay in the walk: by the river Seine at the hour of gold; around Marais on a Sunday; or up Montmartre before the throngs of tourists make it to Sacré-Cœur. Our advice: Allow an extra hour to queue for security at the Louvre and visit the Denon Wing first.

If you are looking for Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art away from the crowds, Musée d’Orsay is the answer, and the stained glass windows at Sainte-Chapelle make waiting worthwhile, even during a brief visit. During summertime, get some bread, cheese, and wine from a local grocery store and have lunch on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin rather than having dinner at a restaurant, because that’s what most locals do.

What's new in 2026

Paris added a 200 percent regional surcharge called Île de France Mobilités to its tourist tax starting January 1, 2025, tripling the base rate. Rates were adjusted again on January 1, 2026, with the ceiling for unclassified accommodation reaching 15.93 euros per night, according to France’s official public service portal. A standard admission ticket to the Louvre Museum costs €32 for non-EU/EEA visitors and €22 for EU/EEA residents. Nearby worth adding

13. Maui, Hawaii

Maui, Hawaii
  • Best for: beach lovers who also want hiking and a bit of rainforest, road trip fans.
  • Ideal duration: 5 to 7 days.
  • Budget: 150 to 250 dollars a day outside luxury resorts.
  • Getting there: Fly into Kahului Airport, then rent a car immediately; there’s no real public transit alternative for reaching the Road to Hana or Haleakalā.

Maui combines beaches, rainforest, mountains, and scenic road trips in one compact island. The Road to Hana is the clear attraction. Still, it’s a full-day drive along the coast with waterfalls and black-sand beaches, while seeing the sunrise above the clouds at Haleakalā National Park becomes the story you will remember for years, but you need a pre-booked spot there. Our advice: rent the smallest car possible; some bridges in Hana are single-lane.

Over at the other end of the island, Kihei and Wailea have calmer beaches and better snorkeling than the Road to Hana stretch, particularly at Ulua Beach and Wailea Beach on calm days. Iao Valley State Park is just a few miles from Wailuku and makes for an easy half-day excursion for those who don’t want to take a full-day drive to Hana.

What's new in 2026

The Hawaii Green Fee took full effect on January 1, 2026, increasing the state’s transient accommodations tax from 10.25 percent to 11 percent on hotels, vacation rental properties, and timeshares, as Governor Josh Green’s office revealed. That’s an additional $3 per day for a $400 room.

Nearby worth adding

Lanai is accessible via a short commercial ferry trip departing from Maalaea Harbor, making for a calmer, much less developed neighbor island.

14. Egypt (Cairo and Giza)

Egypt (Cairo and Giza)
  • Best for: history obsessives, first-time Africa or Middle East visitors.
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days.
  • Budget: 40 to 80 dollars a day outside luxury hotels.
  • Getting there: Fly into Cairo International Airport, then take a taxi or hotel transfer to Giza; the pyramids are close enough that you don’t strictly need a car for that leg alone.

The Pyramids of Giza are right next to Cairo; the complex is much closer to the city than people think, so allow extra time for traffic. The Sphinx is located just below the plateau, and having a guide that actually tells you how it was built and not just poses you for pictures is the key to a good visit.

A Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan is definitely worthwhile, if you can afford the extra time, as it will take you to the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, and the temples at Kom Ombo and Edfu. Abu Simbel is even farther south, near the border with Sudan. It takes an early flight or a long drive from Aswan, but it’s one of the country’s most striking sites.

Our tip

Avoid anyone who approaches you for an unplanned camel ride or photo shoot; decide on the price before you agree, or just walk away. Other than that, Khan el Khalili market and a sunset sail on a felucca on the River Nile are two other attractions worth seeing during your first trip here. At the same time, a relaxed little town of Dahab on the Red Sea Coast may prove useful for scuba-diving or windsurfing enthusiasts.

What's new in 2026

The Grand Egyptian Museum, the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization, opened its highly anticipated full galleries to the public in November 2025, adding yet another attraction for visitors on a pyramids tour. Giza Plateau tickets cost about 15-30 dollars per person, but it is best to check prices yourself before you go, since Egypt changes the cost structure for foreign visitors compared to other countries mentioned here.

15. India (Agra and Delhi)

India (Agra and Delhi)
  • Best for: history and architecture lovers, first-time India visitors.
  • Ideal duration: 3 to 4 days including Delhi.
  • Budget: $20 to $50 a day.
  • Getting there: Fly into Delhi, then take a train or car to Agra, about three to four hours away. A hired car with a driver is easier than self-driving.

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, which is one reason tourists get into trouble, so double-check the dates before planning your visit to Agra. Sunrise is ideal, as the changing light affects the marble’s colors and crowds are minimal in the first hour after opening. Entry to the mausoleum’s interior chamber costs extra on top of the regular entry fees, but it is definitely worth it to see the intricate pietra dura inlay work inside.

The Agra Fort, a short distance from the Taj Mahal, offers the same view of the mausoleum that Shah Jahan reportedly watched from his prison cell, and it’s included in most bundled tickets. In case you have another day to spare, Fatehpur Sikri, an old Mughal capital an hour away from Agra, is far less crowded than either Agra site.

Our advice

Hiring a guide at the entrance often costs less than booking one online, and it gives you the flexibility to walk away if you are not satisfied.

What's new in 2026

Entry for foreign tourists costs about 1,100 to 1,300 rupees (13 to 16 dollars), while entry into the mausoleum interior costs about 200 more rupees.

Nearby worth adding

16. Mexico (Chichen Itza and the Yucatan)

Mexico (Chichen Itza and the Yucatan)
  • Best for: history lovers, budget travelers, anyone extending a Cancun or Riviera Maya trip.
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 6 days if paired with the Yucatan coast.
  • Budget: $35 to $65 a day.
  • Getting there: fly into Cancun, then a rental car or bus to Chichen Itza or Valladolid. A car gives you real flexibility here; buses run on a tourist schedule that limits early or late visits.

Chichen Itza is around two hours away from the coastal city of Cancun. Chichen Itza is easily accessible as a day trip from Cancun. Still, it works much better as an overnight trip because the heat and crowds make it extremely uncomfortable from noon onward, when tour buses start coming from Cancun. Climbing the famous El Castillo pyramid has been impossible since 2006 due to a fatality; set aside time to walk around instead. Combine the ruins with a dip into a nearby cenote and visit the colonial town of Valladolid.

The Ik Kil cenote, located just outside Chichen Itza, has the best lighting but is also the most crowded; Cenote Suytun and Cenote Samula outside Valladolid offer a less crowded alternative. Another interesting place to visit is Ek Balam, where you can still climb the main pyramid.

Our recommendation

Spend at least one night in Valladolid, because it would be quite a rush to make that round trip from Cancun in one day.

What's new in 2026

Chichen Itza unified the double entry cost into one Boleto Único starting April 27, 2026. You will pay at one booth instead of lining up at two booths, one for federal and one for state fees. Admission for foreigners is 697 pesos, about 35-40 dollars.

17. New Zealand

New Zealand
  • Best for: hikers, nature lovers, first-time Southern Hemisphere visitors.
  • Ideal duration: 10 to 14 days for both islands, 5 to 7 if you’re only doing the South Island.
  • Budget: $100 to $180 a day.
  • Getting there: fly into Auckland or Christchurch; a rental car is almost essential, and public transport between regions is limited outside the main cities.

First-time visitors often try to fit both islands into one visit and end up rushing through it all. The South Island offers dramatic landscapes like Milford Sound and Queenstown’s adventure activities, while the glowworm caves of Waitomo are worth the trip north to the North Island. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand’s best-known Great Walk and can be completed in a single day, unlike the multi-day walks.

Rotorua, a few hours from Auckland, can be added to the North Island trip to see geothermal parks and experience Māori culture. Abel Tasman National Park, on the South Island, offers great coastal walks and kayaking if you’re tired of hiking in Milford Sound and Queenstown.

Our tip

The distance between two points on the map may be short; however, New Zealand has many twists and turns, so budget enough time for travel.

What's new in 2026

The International Visitor Levy currently stands at 100 NZD, was implemented in October 2024, and remains in effect, with a government review of the levy amount expected to be completed by late 2026, according to New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

18. Turkey (Istanbul and Cappadocia)

Turkey (Istanbul and Cappadocia)
  • Best for: history lovers, budget-conscious first-timers, bucket-list balloon rides.
  • Ideal duration: 5 to 7 days split between the two.
  • Budget: $40 to $80 a day.
  • Getting there: fly into Istanbul, then a short domestic flight to Cappadocia’s Kayseri or Nevşehir airport. You don’t need a car in Istanbul, but one helps you explore Cappadocia’s valleys at your own pace.

Istanbul is easy to recommend because Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar are all within a short walk. Cappadocia is what prompts people to book this tour, thanks to the hot air balloon flights at sunrise over the valley’s stone formations. Since balloon operator rates vary by season, please confirm the latest rates with your selected operator to avoid an outdated price quote.

The ancient city of Ephesus, near the seaside town of Selçuk, features some of the finest preserved Roman remains in the Mediterranean and is a great Turkish Riviera add-on. The Turkish hamam is an experience worth trying once in your life when you visit Istanbul, especially after all the walking from the Blue Mosque to Hagia Sophia.

Our tip

Book your balloon ride for your first morning in the region, not your last; flights get canceled for wind more often than people expect, and you want a buffer day.

What's new in 2026

Turkey hosted 2.25 million international visitors in January 2026 alone, an annual increase of 3.48%, with Istanbul as the main gateway and the Turkish Riviera extending its season past summer.

19. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Best for: a beach-and-mountain combo, nightlife, and a first-time South America city trip.
  • Ideal duration: 4 to 6 days.
  • Budget: $50 to $90 a day.
  • Getting there: Fly into Galeão International Airport, then take a taxi or rideshare into the city; don’t try public transit with luggage when you arrive. You don’t need a car once you’re there; ride-hailing works well in the city.

Few places let you take a cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and then head to Copacabana Beach. A standard round-trip ticket purchased directly from the official Parque Bondinho complex costs 199 reais (approximately $36–$40 USD, depending on exchange rates). If you want an official priority pass to bypass the queues completely, those options generally range from $47 to $64 USD through booking platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator.

Tijuca National Park, the world’s biggest urban rainforest, is right inside the city limits and offers a half-day walk with waterfalls and views of Rio. The Selarón Steps in Lapa and their music bars are something to visit if you find that Copacabana and Ipanema get old after a couple of days.

Our tip

Keep your valuables low on the beach and in crowded places; it’s common sense, and even locals follow it.

What's new in 2026

The city of Rio received more than 1.3 million foreign visitors in the first six months of 2026, an almost 16 percent increase from last year, with February being the record-breaking month due to the Carnival season.

Cheap places to travel: best destinations by daily budget

  • Under $50 a day: India, Bali, Egypt, Turkey, Marrakech.
  • $50 to $100 a day: Kyoto, Rome, Cape Town, Patagonia, Rio de Janeiro.
  • $100 to $200 a day: Santorini, New Zealand, Swiss Alps.
  • $200 and up: Bora Bora, Maui.

Which of these are UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

Eleven of the nineteen destinations carry UNESCO World Heritage status: Kyoto (Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto), Rome (Historic Centre of Rome), Machu Picchu, Marrakech (Medina of Marrakesh), Egypt (Pyramid Fields of Giza), India’s Taj Mahal, Mexico’s Chichen Itza, Paris (Banks of the Seine), New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park, Turkey’s Göreme National Park and Cappadocia, and Rio de Janeiro’s Carioca Landscapes. The rest, Santorini, Bora Bora, Patagonia, Cape Town, Tokyo, and Maui, aren’t currently inscribed.

Short Trip versus Long Trip

  • Best for 3 to 4 days: Kyoto, Rome, Santorini, Marrakech, Swiss Alps, Paris.
  • Best for 5 to 7 days: Machu Picchu, Bora Bora, Cape Town, Maui, Turkey, Rio de Janeiro.
  • Best for 10 plus days: New Zealand, Bali.

What to check before booking

What to check before booking any of these travel destinations.

  1. Passport and visa requirements
  2. Entry or tourist taxes
  3. Attraction reservation rules
  4. Seasonal closures
  5. Local transport options
  6. Travel advisories
  7. Travel insurance
  8. Mobile data or eSIM availability.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is worth the expense for any trip beyond a few days, and it matters even more for higher altitude or remote destinations like Patagonia or Machu Picchu, where a missed flight or an injury far from a hospital gets expensive fast. Don’t assume your credit card’s coverage is enough; check the limits before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most beautiful travel destinations in the world?
There’s no single answer, but Santorini, Bora Bora, and the Swiss Alps consistently top lists for dramatic natural scenery.

Which destination on this list is best for a first international trip?
Marrakech or Bali. Both are affordable, visa-friendly for most Western passport holders, and forgiving for first-timers.

Is Machu Picchu difficult to visit without hiking the Inca Trail?
No. You can take a train to Aguas Calientes and a bus up to the site, no camping or serious fitness required.

Is Santorini still overcrowded in 2026?
No. The new 8,000-person daily cruise cap cut peak-day crowds by more than half, compared with over 17,000 passengers landing in a single day before the regulation.

How much should I budget for a Bora Bora honeymoon?
$164 a day without an overwater bungalow, $600 and up a day with one, and more for premium resorts.

What’s the best time to hike Torres del Paine’s W Trek?
December through February, Patagonia’s summer, for the longest daylight and most stable weather.

Do I need a visa for Morocco or Indonesia?
Most Western passport holders enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days. Indonesia requires an entry visa plus a separate tourist levy.

How many days should I spend in Cape Town?
Four to five days covers the city, Table Mountain, Cape Point, and a day in the Winelands without rushing.

What is the best country to visit for a first international trip?
Marrakech and Bali are the two easiest first international trips on this list, both affordable and visa-friendly for most Western passport holders.

Which destination is best for a 3-day trip?
Kyoto, Rome, and Paris all work well as compact 3-4-day city trips.

Which destinations are easiest to visit without a car?
Kyoto, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, and Istanbul can all be explored on foot or by train, with no rental car needed.

How much does a trip to these destinations cost per day?
It ranges from about $30 a day in Bali to $250 a day in Bora Bora or Maui, depending on the destination and hotel tier.

Is Bora Bora worth the cost compared to the Maldives?
Bora Bora offers dramatic volcanic scenery and Otemanu as a backdrop that the flatter Maldives atolls don’t have. In contrast, the Maldives generally has more overwater bungalow options at a wider range of price points. If budget is the deciding factor, the Maldives is usually cheaper to reach and stay in from most parts of the world.

The bottom line

Across all 19 travel destinations here, the best one isn’t the prettiest; it’s the one that matches how you actually want to travel. Someone who loves hiking will find more enjoyment in going to Patagonia compared to someone who enjoys relaxing on an exotic beach in Bora Bora. Whatever list of best places to visit in the world you started from, choose based on what kind of traveler you are and what kind of days you hope to have.

If you’re still narrowing it down, a travel itinerary template makes it easier to compare how a Kyoto trip fills five days versus how a Bora Bora trip fills four. And since half of these destinations mean real walking, whether it’s Torres del Paine’s trails or Marrakech’s medina, it’s worth a look at a proper travel backpack guide before you pack. One more habit worth building: check government travel advisories before you book anything nonrefundable. The US State Department recently advised against all travel to Russia, and advisories for other regions can shift with little warning. If international travel isn’t in the cards this year, a weekend trip within the US can still scratch the itch.
